Math
- This week continued to strengthen our skills with adding and subtracting fractions by finding common denominators.
- Next week we will finish up Module 3, review Modules 1-3 and take the assessment.
- The week after this will be a mini-unit on GCF and LCM.
- Unit 3 will begin the week of November 10th. This unit will be on place value and decimals.
- October Number Corner will focus on collecting data from our carrots on their daily mass and creating a double line graph to document our findings. In addition, we will be observing the faces of various "buildings" to find the matching 3d version of the building.
- November Number Corner will focus on classifying triangles based on angles and lengths of sides. In addition, we will include some work with coordinate grids and transformations. Finally, we will introduce and look for patterns when comparing measurements within the metric system for length.
Literacy this week
- This week we worked on Module 1/Unit 2. The texts we will be using are Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and an abridged version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- We are will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read. This week we completed a mid-unit assessment that involved organizing their thoughts from the text so that could complete another character reaction paragraph along with answering some questions about metaphors.
- We also looked at and worked with some 2-voice poetry.
- Finally, we used a model to analyze what would go into a literary essay based on character reactions.
- Next week, students will be working on creating their own character reaction essay.
- We continued to follow Esperanza's story as her and her family fled Mexico to the United States. Ask your 5th grader to tell you about the story.
- For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
- Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well! Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Science
- Our first unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
- Our second chapter will focus on: Why do some salad dressings have sediments, and others do not?
- Our third chapter will focus on: Why can salad-dressing ingredients separate again after being mixed?
Social Studies--Starting next week!!
