New News
Oldie, but Goodies
- Thursday, February 26th--Hamilton Orientation for Family names ending in A-L 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
- Tuesday, March 3rd--Hamilton Orientation for Family names ending in M-Z 6:00 pm-7:30 pm
- Friday, February 13th we will be having an Author's Tea in our 5th grade classrooms. For Black History Month, 5th grader's will be reading books written by African American authors during our social studies time during the weeks of January 26-February 12th. Students will be asked to summarize what they have read and then share out to their classmates during our Author's Tea on Friday, February 13th. We are asking families to sign up to send in treats for this tea. A sign-up was shared with families last week.
- Valentine's Day will ALSO be recognized in our classrooms on Friday, February 13th. It is OPTIONAL if your kiddo would like to pass out valentines. Our only request is that if they do bring valentines to pass out, they must have one for everyone in the classroom.
Math
- We are working in Unit 4. We will be focusing on Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals.
- This week we focused on the the algorithm strategy and story problems. Next week we will review our learning and take the Unit 4 assessment.
- January Number Corner will focus on numerical patterns and graphs. Along with this, we will be using multiplication of fractions to help us keep a running total of time and money.
- February Number Corner will focus on finding the area of objects that are measured in fractional parts along with whole numbers. In addition, we will do activities involving converting units in the metric system using milliliters and deciliters
Literacy this week
- This week we finished our work in Module 2 Unit 2 of EL.
- Next week we will begin Module 2 Unit 3 where students will be planning, writing, revising and editing a narrative writing piece based on the animal they used in their non-fiction project.
- We are reading a narrative non-fiction text called The Most Beautiful Roof in the World by Kathryn Lasky.
- We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.
- For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
- Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well! Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Social Studies--Black History Month
- Students selected a book to read with a partner(s) or solo. They chose from some titles we have here at Randall that were written by African American authors. Then, during the weeks of January 26-February 13th, we will be using our science/social studies time for students to just enjoy these rich and beautifully written books. They will also be asked to summarize and then share what they read during our Author's Tea on Friday, February 13th. (A sign up was shared with all the families for families to provide drinks/treats.)
SELS/Health lessons
- We are all caught up on SELS and Health lessons for 2nd quarter :)
