New News
Oldie, but Goodies
- Students will need headphones and a computer mouse at school. Please send this in as soon as you can--Thanks!
- We sent home a Digital Device Agreement with your 5th grader. Please make sure this is signed and returned to school asap. Thanks!
- If you know throughout the year that you will be gone on vacation, you will need to fill out this absence in Infinite Campus. IN ADDITION, please let us know so that we are also in the know. Thanks!
- Here is our shameless plea to all parents/guardians. We don't take many field trips during the year, but if things come up at the last minute and for the end of the year all day trip we really count on parents joining us. If you think you might even consider this, please do the volunteer training now so we are not scrambling at the last minute. The training is good for only one year. After that, you do need to re-apply, but it is a simple process after the first round of training. Thank you!! Volunteering Link
- This is our weekly blog where we will update what we did that week, post information for families, update calendar events and other important information. An updated blog will be posted every Friday.
- If you are ever looking for past information, you will have access to all of our posts throughout the year.
- Food Service Menus can also be found at the following link - Menus
Math
- This week the 5th grade math class continued to work with some vocabulary around multiplication as well as some new strategies involving multiplying by 10. We also learned about and solved for surface area.
- We continued our work with writing and solving numerical expressions.
- We talked about and explored volume.
- Our Number Corner this month will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways.
Literacy this week
- We started Module 1/Unit 1 this week.
- The texts we will be using are Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and an abridged version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- We will be focusing on finding the gist of the text and expressing our learning in verbal and written communication.
- This week after we read a chapter in the book, we discussed which human rights were violated and why we felt that way. We also discussed, modeled, and practiced writing summaries based on our reading.
- For our ALL block this week, we did some literacy screeners and practice some of our routines for small group and partner learning.
Science
- Our first unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
