Math
  • This week the 5th grade math class finished our work in Unit 1.
  • This week we a few days of some basic division strategies and then did a quick assessment.
  • Division is a concept that will continue to reappear throughout the year.  We will focusing more on division in the second semester.
  • Next week we will begin Unit 2 on adding and subtracting fractions.
  • October Number Corner  will focus on collecting data from our carrots on their daily mass and creating a double line graph to document our findings.  In addition, we will be observing the faces of various "buildings" to find the matching 3d version of the building.
Literacy this week
  • This week we completed Module 1/Unit 1 and started Module 1/Unit 2
  • The texts we will be using are Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and an abridged version of  the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • We are will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.
  • This week we finished Module 1/Unit 1 with another assessment based on explaining how characters' human rights were violated in a chapter.  Students also were asked to answer questions using evidence from the text by quoting accurately.
  • We also began Unit 2.  In this unit we will be focusing heavily on explaining how the characters react differently in scenarios.  Again, students will be asked to back up their thoughts with evidence quoted accurately from the text.
  • We continued to follow Esperanza's story as her and her family fled Mexico to the United States.  Ask your 5th grader to tell you about the story.
  • For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
  • Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well!  Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Science
  • Our first unit will be on Modeling Matter as we answer the question:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
      • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
