Math
- This week we started Unit 5 on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. Luckily, we have done some work on this earlier in the year with our Number Corner work. We will continue this work, learn how to make a model for these equations and practice our skills with complex story problems.
- February Number Corner will focus on finding the area of objects that are measured in fractional parts along with whole numbers. In addition, we will do activities involving converting units in the metric system using milliliters and deciliters
Literacy this week
- This week we completed our narrative animal stories and worked on artistic representations of the various layers of the rainforest.
- We have completed our 2nd Module of our EL curriculum for the year! Next week we will start Module 3 on Athlete Leaders of Social Change.
- We are reading a non-fiction text called Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson. She is the daughter of Jackie Robinson and we will learn a lot about his history and his journey to become an athlete for social change.
- We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read. In addition.....your 5th grader will be writing a LOT MORE in this module. Be prepared for possible whining and complaining. It is a lot, but it is important work. Their skills and confidence in writing summaries will jump a significant amount :)
- For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.
- Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well! Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.
Social Studies--Black History Month
- Students selected a book to read with a partner(s) or solo. They chose from some titles we have here at Randall that were written by African American authors. Then, during the weeks of January 26-February 13th, we will be using our science/social studies time for students to just enjoy these rich and beautifully written books.
- Today we had our Author's Tea and students had time to share about the books they have been reading with their peers. It has been such a joy to watch the students really embrace this time to just read and share.
- Thank you to all of you who volunteered to send in goodies for the tea. It was greatly appreciated by all.
Conference Prep Next Week
- During our social studies and science time for next week, students will be preparing for their student led conferences. They will be reflecting on their learning, finding evidence of strengths and struggles this year. They will also be practicing presenting this aloud to an audience.
Science --Patterns of Earth and Sky (Starting the week of February 23rd
Our third unit will be on Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
Why do we see different stars at different times?
- Our first chapter will focus on : Why don't we see a lot of stars in the daytime?
SELS/Health lessons
- Counting on Katherine (Katherine Johnson)
